Local internet cafes to be impacted by possible ban

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) --The signs on internet cafes may go from open to close.

Lawmakers are voting on a bill to shut them down all across the state of Florida.

But what does this mean for residents employed at these cafes? We went to find answers.

We took a trip to internet cafes in Havana, Quincy, and a couple places in Tallahassee, but the business owners told us they didn't want to comment.

Majority of lawmakers say they support and outright ban, while some say they just need to be regulated.

But commissioners in both Leon and Gadsden counties say this could have an impact on jobs, but some say there are other opportunities for employment.

"We certainly believe there's dignity in all work, and we certainly support people working, but again because of the legal question involved with internet cafes it's a decision that's going to have to be made by the state legislature," said Doug Croley, Gadsden County Commissioner.

"I think its plenty of other places where people could find a job, i don't think this is the type of employer i think we want to promote," said Bryan Desloge Leon County Commissioner.

In Gadsden, the cafes are regulated by individual cities. However in Leon, an ordinance requires owners to pass a background check and each facility must have security at all times.

If state lawmakers pass these bills, no county or city ordinance could keep the doors to internet cafes open.
