TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - One local immigration lawyer says that President Trump's executive order is flat out wrong.
His stance may be controversial but as he explains, it's a stance he says needs to be heard.
FSU graduate and lawyer Brandon Smoot is not mincing words when it comes to President Donald Trump's executive order on immigration. He believes the policy is wrong and doesn't want to see a repeat of past policies.
"Have we excluded the Chinese before yes, have we excluded people based on race and based on national origin in our immigration laws in the past, definitely," said Smoot. "But that's something we should look back on and say we don't want to return to that right."
Smoot says we could be slipping back in time equating the current order to a time in the country, no one is proud of.
"It's like segregation, we don't want to go back to that do we?" said Smoot. "Do we really want to return to some kind of system? We would not stand for this."
And while Smoot doesn't currently have a client detained, he does want to be a part of the fight.
"I want to get involved in this area, at the moment I don't have anything specifically planned to do that," said Smoot. "I do hope to do some in the future, to get in touch with someone and help out individuals who are being detained for long periods of time."
