TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum recognized a local hero, who for the past 24 years has tutored individuals in the community.
At the Life Changers-Church of God and Christ, Mayor Gillum honored Danette McBride with a medal and a celebration for her work.
Not only has Mcbride helped tutor kids but she started a program called, Young Women of Excellence, which teaches young girls public speaking and how to be confident.
"It feels amazing, overwhelming, I was totally surprised, but it is an honor just to be recognized," said McBride. "I don't do anything to be recognized, but just to see the kids, just to see the people that would want to recognize me for what I have done. It's just absolutely amazing."
Past recipients include people who have helped former felons adjust back into society and care for the needy.
