TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) -- Some Tallahassee organizations worked together over the weekend to rescue pets and provide resources to flood victims in Louisiana.
Tallahassee Big Dog Rescue teamed up with the Leon County Humane Society and Crossroads Shih Tzu Rescue to help the victims in the Baton Rouge area by collecting all kinds of pet supplies.
The Humane Society, one of the participating organizations, gathered 600 pounds of cat litter. A car full of donated items headed to Louisiana over the weekend. The team delivered the donations and rescued 18 dogs and 6 cats to bring back to Tallahassee.
"To be able to have a community that, in two days, can just jump together -- and to have rescue groups work together, so, when you only make one trip, you can save the many instead of the few," said Dee Ann Maxfield, president of Tallahassee Big Dog Rescue. "I don't know how to put into words the support that we get from our local community."
The donations went to tent cities in Livingston and Baton Rouge. The animals brought back to Tallahassee will be quarantined for ten days, since many were found swimming in flood waters and drinking polluted, contaminated water.
The organizations are in talks with contacts in Louisiana about a potential second trip.
