TALLAHASSEE, FL. (WTXL) -- Often times, it can be hard to express in words what a veteran means to you or how grateful you are for their service.

Friday morning, a local girls organization, "Girls on the Run," partnered with FSU's women's basketball team to encourage others to write thank-you notes to veterans.

The ultimate goal for "Girls on the Run" is to get 500 to 1000 thank-you cards for these veterans. From there, the women's basketball team will pick up the cards and deliver them to the Sacred Soil Project where they will then be distributed locally.

"Every other season, we do a council-wide where every school involved [in "Girls on the Run"] gets to do one big project," says Ashley Mayo, the Program Coordinator for Girls on the Run. "This year we chose the veterans to support. They're doing thank-you cards. They're donating toiletries, canned goods, non-perishables to give those to our local veterans."

By giving back to the veterans and community, "Girls on the Run" hopes that volunteer service will be instilled in the girls within the organization.
