MADISON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - Tri-County Electric Cooperative is warning customers about a recent scam where people are posing as company workers and demanding money.
According to Tri-County Electric Cooperative, members have recently reported suspicious phone calls from individuals posing as a representative of TCEC and demanding payment.
They say the Madison County Sheriff’s Office has been made aware of the scam attempts.
TCEC officials say using computer technology, the scammers are able to mask their phone number to show a phone number similar or exactly as TCEC’s phone number.
The scammers posing as TCEC or other utility providers call and insist that members are late on their bill or that due to payment history a new deposit is required.
Scammers may threaten to disconnect service, become aggressive and angry, demanding immediate payment with a pre-paid card or money transfer service.
TCEC says their employees will never ask for or require pre-paid cards for payments. They will not disconnect delinquent accounts without multiple attempts at prior notice or after normal business hours. In addition, TCEC will never demand personal information such as driver’s license number over the phone.
Members who think they are being contacted by a phone scammer should hang up and call Tri-County Electric Cooperative at (850)973-2285 or (800)999-2285 and their local police department immediately.
