TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - How many days are left to procrastinate on your holiday shopping? They're numbered, with Christmas just four days away.

But amid the shopping rush today, were officers from the Florida A&M Police Department.

Wednesday, the FAMU Police Department held a Shop with a Cop event at the Apalachee Parkway Walmart. Officers took children, selected from Big Bend area's schools, on a morning shopping spree.

The goal?

To foster positive relationships between law enforcement and children in the community.

"We're not left behind. Our family is from Fort Lauderdale so we don't have any family here so its juts touching that they even though about us throughout," said Jaleesa Newbold, a parent.

Officers helped 17 families buy toys, clothes and other items.

"I strive to remind them to make sure that as we getting things that we want to play with such as toys, that we also remind ourselves the importance of reading. This is a great opportunity to buy books  and so forth so that the kids can continue to read," said Officer Scott with FAMU PD.

This is the second year FAMU PD has taken part in the event.

Those who took part say it's a great way to make sure area kids get to have a great Christmas.
