Local businesses see increase in holiday shopping

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Christmas is around the corner and holiday shoppers are still out grabbing last-minute gifts.

This holiday season many locally owned stores have seen an increase in sales including Retrofit Records.

"The shop always does well during the holidays" said Sharod Bines, Owner of Retrofit Records "A lot of people are buying gifts for people. Some may be are getting a record player for Christmas so they want record."

Midtown Readers in Midtown said they are also seeing a boost in sales.

Darrell Ellis, Manager of Midtown Reader said even though many students are back home their business is booming.

"We have wrapped more presents in the past week than we have ever wrapped in the store before," said Darrell Ellis.

Less than a mile away Southern Compass Outfitters is experiencing the same increase.

"This is absolutely the biggest boost of the year for us...Even though we lose the students we still get a large number of people coming through the door from out of town," said Mary Fran Andree, Co-Owner of Southern Compass Outfitters

Outside of seeing the normal December rise in customers, businesses are also seeing an surge compared to last year.

"It is definitely a lot more busy and exciting and bustling in the store compared to last year," said Darrell Ellis.

If you're still shopping for presents, you're not alone.

A recent survey from the National Retail Federation found that 24 percent of holiday shoppers planned to grab their last gifts this weekend and seven percent will still be shopping on Christmas Eve.
