TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - With Tallahassee's constant development comes a growing demand for work in the construction industry.

Monday, Lively Technical Center announced a new program to help Big Bend residents get into those jobs and quickly.

The Building Trades and Construction Design Technology program provides students with the certifications needed for construction jobs in as fast as nine months.

The Greater Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce and Leon County Schools have been working on building a pipeline of trained workers in an industry seeing great demand lately.

The program's director said local contractors need more people to fill those jobs and this course gets them ready to do that.

"There are great careers locally that don't require that A.A. or that bachelor's degree. It may require a little bit more training -- that "career in a year" -- and that's what Lively offers," said Shelly Bell, the career, technical and adult education director for Leon County Schools. "We're going to give them that training that they need to go right out into the workforce into a skilled, in-demand career."

Classes start Monday, August 13. The program includes a night class as a dual enrollment option for high school students.
