LIVE OAK, Fla. (WTXL) - The Live Oak Police Department says they were contacted by a citizen who was "shaken" by a scam call she received Friday morning.
LOPD says they were contacted by a woman on Friday who was "shaken" by a phone call she received.
The woman stated that a person claiming to work for the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office called her, saying that missed jury duty and needed to pay $2,000 or she would be arrested.
The caller also had access to specific information, including where she worked, to try to validate his claim.
Police say the woman was concerned, so she complied with the caller's instructions to purchase cards and send them to a specified location.
While doing this, the woman called officers and kept the scammer on the line until they arrived.
LOPD assures people that they, SCSO or any other law enforcement agency will contact residents this way. They say this is the time of year that individuals come up with elaborate plans to scam citizens.
They warn the numbers they call from may appear local and that scammers may even use names that are associated with official organizations.
LOPD advises that residents never supply banking or personal information to anyone over the phone. When in doubt call, LOPD at (386) 362-7463 or SCSO at (386) 362-2222 who are always glad to help.
