TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - The Foundation for Leon County Schools has awarded elementary schools in the area funding to bring weather stations to the classroom.

Leon County Schools says that the donation will provide "an advanced science, technology, engineering, and mathematics program to the Leon County Virtual School."

The virtual schools says that ten new weather stations will be brought into classrooms through a product called WeatherSTEM. Virtual School Principal Jessica Lowe says that it's "an integration of weather station instruments enabling students to collect, distribute, and apply atmospheric and garden data, and STEM-based curriculum for grades K-12."

Sixteen other weather stations were donated to Leon County Schools last year, and the $40,000 coming in to the schools this year will allow those stations to get enhancements.

In addition to this STEM donation, the Foundation for Leon County School will also be awarding  $74,000 to teachers who applied for mini-grants. The foundation says will allow for a more hands-on learning experience.

The donation check was presented to the schools Monday morning at Hartsfield Elementary.
