TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The sunshine state, along with four other states, held their primaries on Tuesday, to help decide which presidential hopefuls would be the nominees for the 2016 race.

Leon County had a voter turnout of 50.3% with close to 80,000 votes being cast. 30,000 votes were cast prior to Tuesday. For the republican side, Donald trump had 29.6% of the vote here and Rubio was right behind him, followed by Ted Cruz. For the Democrats, Hilary Clinton saw roughly 56% of the vote with Bernie more than 10 percentage points behind her.

Voters saw some new changes in this year's voting process including electronic voter identification. Voters now present their drivers license to election officials in order to check in, and the voters use an electronic signature to get their ballot.

Florida is an extremely important state in the primaries as its a winner take all state for the republican nomination. However, registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans in the state. As Florida moves toward the November general election, there are still close to 300,000 voters who registered with no party affiliation.
