TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - The Leon County School Board is considering a plan to allow Gay Straight Alliance (GSAs) organizations in schools, after hearing arguments from students and supporters at a recent meeting.

At March 24th's meeting, supporters from The Oasis Center for Women and Girls, as well as students from area schools, spoke to the board about the organization, saying they want to create a safe place for teens.

Currently, three schools have the student organization established. However, organizers say that students who do not have this resource are at a disadvantage and could be more prone to low self-esteem.

Supporters came to the meeting with a petition that had almost 500 signatures, asking the board to unanimously sign it.

Leon County Schools Superintendent Jackie Pons commended the group for having the courage to take a stand: "You did this with passion from your heart and I think that's very important. And there will be a lot of people watching this leadership activity."

The school board told supporters that they will take up the petition at a future meeting.
