TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL)-- FCAT results are in and a little over half of third grade students in the state passed on the standardized test in math and reading.
The Department of Education announced the results today. 57% of third graders scored at a level three or higher in 2014, the same as last year. 58% reached the passing score in math, also the same as 2013. Florida students must score a level two or higher in reading on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test in order to advance to the next grade.
In Leon County, school leaders say they are thrilled with their results, improving in all five assessment areas.
"We're certainly proud of our test scores this year," said School Board Member Scotty Crowe.
Education leaders say counties in the Big Bend region made noticeable improvements also in Gadsden and Franklin counties. Here are the full results:
· Leon County improved from 2013 in all five assessment areas released today. Third grade reading increased four percentage points and third grade mathematics improved six percentage points, while in writing, fourth and eighth graders both improved by four percentage points, and tenth graders moved up 11 percentage points.
· Gadsden County improved from 2013 in four of the five assessment areas released today. Third grade students improved by five percentage points in reading. In writing, fourth graders increased four percentage points and tenth grade students rose by two percentage points.
· Franklin County improved from 2013 in four of the five assessment areas released today. Third grade students improved 10 percentage points in mathematics and three percentage points in reading. In writing, eighth grade students improved an impressive 17 percentage points over the last year.
