TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Tuesday night, the Leon County School Board will vote on a new agreement with the teacher's association.

This comes after the teacher's association voted to ratify the 2017-2020 collective bargaining contract last week.

Part of the deal includes emergency shelter pay and bonuses for certain teachers, something Superintendent Rocky Hanna is shining a light on.

About $2,000 in small bonuses will go to teachers who are not covered by Florida's Best and Brightest Program. The hotly-debated state law ties teacher bonuses to their scores on college entrance exams.

The program is meant to encourage the smartest college graduates to choose teaching as a profession and stay in it. However, many teachers took the SAT or ACT decades ago, and they argue their teaching abilities can't simply be defined by a score on a standardized test.

Hanna is against the program because he believes school districts should have the power to determine their own employee's pay.

Tuesday night's school board meeting gets underway at 6 p.m. at the Howell Center. WTXL will have the results of tonight's vote and more details on the agreement on your news at 11.
