TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Leon County School Board members held a panel discussion about the state of public schools in District 5 on Tuesday night.

The panel at Godby High was brought together to hold an open question forum about the safety from violent acts, including active shooter situations and what they can learn from previous shootings.

They also discussed topics to improve connections with further education opportunities, like 4-year universities, community colleges and trade schools.

The event creator, and new School Board Member, Joy Bowen, says the panel provided some insight for other school officials as well.

"This is our first forum to discuss the state of education in district five," she said. "I think it went really well tonight. We had very hard questions asked and some answers and I think that those questions spurred the superintendent and staff to take a broader look at what we need to do."

This was the first panel of its kind and the next one is going to be in March. A date has yet to be decided.
