LEON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - You could save money this tax season if you own property in Leon County because of what's called a Homestead Exemption.

This exemption isn't automatic, so property owners have to apply for it and time is running out.

The deadline to file is March 1, just like it is every year.

This tax benefit takes up to $50,000 off the assessed value of a property.

The Leon County Property Appraiser's Office said last year, that translated into savings of up to $800.

Filing also puts a cap on how much that property value grows each year.

The office said it doesn't take that long to hear back from the county after applying.

"It could be immediate. It could be 24, 48 hours, or if it's through the mail, it could be a little bit longer," said Meghan Poskey, Director of Management Services with Leon County Property Appraiser's Office. "But it's fairly quick, and once you file, the great thing is unless you move, sell or rent your property, you do not have to file again. So, it automatically renews for you."

In order to file, you'll need your Social Security number, a valid driver's license or state ID number, and a valid vehicle tag or voter registration.

You can file in person, online or through the mail.

If you can't head downtown to file in person, the property appraiser's office is also going to different parts of the county to set up remote filing.
