TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Leon County Commissioners discussed Tuesday night whether or not to leave the Community Redevelopment Agency board and phase out the county's funding.

The county could save millions of dollars in the long run and give the city more control of where and how development happens.

The proposal would end the county's funding of downtown district projects by the fiscal year 2024. County commissioners would also leave the CRA board.

It's estimated the county would save $23 million overall, which will help make up losses expected from a homestead exemption in fiscal year 2020.

The county would still invest in the Frenchtown, Southside district.

The proposal calls for the city and county to have the same property tax rate for that district. Right now, the county's rate is twice that of the city's.

The city commission will talk about this issue at its meeting on Wednesday.

If the city and county approve these terms, then this would go to the CRA board for final approval.
