TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) -- The Florida Department of Health in Leon County launched a community campaign Monday to help control the mosquito population locally.
The health department is teaming up with Leon County Schools and Leon County government for the "Spill the Water" campaign.
Its goal is to encourage kids to look out for and get rid of standing water, where mosquitos tend to breed.
The department says keeping an eye on mosquito population has become more important recently, given numerous cases of the mosquito-borne Zika virus in Florida.
"We really want to make sure that the mosquito numbers are down as low as possible, so that if somebody does come into our community with one of these mosquito-related illnesses, that the chances of it spreading are going to be minimized, because we've minimized the number of mosquitos in our county," said Christopher Tittel, spokesperson for the Florida Department of Health in Leon County.
The statewide campaign launched a website with activities and games to get kids more involved.
Locally, the health department offers more resources on the Leon County website.
