TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) – Leon County is encouraging residents to be smart about recyclables during National Recycling week.

According to officials, glass bottles, jars, and cardboard can be recycled. Meanwhile, items such as plastic bags, chip bags and light bulbs shouldn't be recycled.

Tessa Schreiner, Leon County's Sustainability and Recycling Manager, said it is important to be smart when recycling to protect the environment.

"Recycling is wonderful because it diverts trash from our landfills and we are able to use those materials to make new materials. We are able to conserve resources, energy and water," said Schreiner. "So we are focusing on how people can recycle better locally, it's important to recycle right."

To learn more about what you can and cannot recycle, Leon county is hosting 'The Unusual Suspects of Recycling' event Thursday at Cascades Park from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
