TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - On Friday, Leon County high school students will be leading a rally to honor victims of gun violence and to demonstrate the need for realistic gun laws.
Leon County high school students want to give more young voters and soon-to-be voters a voice in the community regarding gun legislation at the rally.
The event will be happening in conjunction with the 19th anniversary of the Columbine shooting, as well as the National Walkout Day.
Speakers will include Leon County students and survivors of gun violence.
According to Casey Epstein-Gross, a local Leon county high school student and one of the organizers of this rally, the Walk Up & Speak Out event is necessary.
“Past protests in Tallahassee have been mostly led by adults. We as students and future voters think it’s necessary to show that this is not an age-exclusive issue, and that even teenagers care greatly about gun control. We hope to encourage Tallahassee youth to have their voices heard and to stand up for what they believe in. We want to show the media and the legislators, the ones that suggest we give guns to teachers or wear clear backpacks, that we aren’t going anywhere," said Epstein-Gross. "We need to stand together as a united front, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, or political affiliation, and show that we are ready to work for change, and that even months after the shooting, this movement will not die down, and that when it comes time for primaries, we will be there.”
The rally will take place at Tallahassee Capital Courtyard on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
