TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - Leon County commissioners unanimously approve a $238.4 million budget for the coming fiscal year.

It's a nearly 4.5% increase from last year's budget. The millage rate will stay the same.

Commissioners say the budget will cover government expenses, without having to reduce program services.

According to leaders, compared to other Florida counties, Leon has the ninth lowest net budget per capita and the seventh lowest number of employees per capita.

Also included in the budget is a $1.5 million to help implement the board's sidewalk program. Leaders also plan to supply the sheriff's office with resources to remain competitive in the retention of deputies and correctional officers.

They're also increasing funding for social service agencies, by giving $175,000 to the Community Human Service Partnership. The county is also planning on using $100,000 to help at-risk and disadvantaged youth throughout Leon County.

In addition, the county is adding an environmental specialist position, a public works engineer, a park attendant, and a specialist for the supervisor of elections.
