LEON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - The Leon County Commission is holding another public hearing.

This time they're talking about how they plan to use your tax dollars with a new budget.

Wednesday night is the second public hearing on the adoption of millage rates and 2018 budget. Last week, a couple dozen residents showed up but no one spoke up and that's likely because they didn't see anything too controversial on the agenda.

The county is ending this fiscal year with a balanced budget.

The commission's proposed budget for 2018 is $253.7 million, a 3 percent increase from last year.

That does not include a millage rate increase but because property values are going up, the millage rate is expected to raise the county $5.75 million extra.

County commissioner John Dailey says some of that money will be used for a new ambulance and to hire 12 new positions at the Sheriff's Office.

Even though the millage rate stays the same, the fact that property values are increasing means homeowners will pay $2.31 more a month for the average homeowner, about $28 more a year.

A vote is expected and if it's approved, it'll go into effect right away.
