TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - In Leon County, commissioners have approved a voluntary collection agreement with AirBNB for the collection of "tourist development taxes", known as a "Bed tax".

In 2016, Leon County staff estimated that about 300 AirBNB hosts earned $933,000 from 8,000 guests at a rate of about $116 per night.

With the tax agreement, AirBNB would be required to collect and tax revenues from their clients and the county will benefit from these funds.

Commissioners say this will be an investment for the future of tourism in the county.

Leon County is now the 39th county in the Sunshine State where AirBNB will collect and remit bed taxes. It will be effective starting July 1st.
