TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Veterans in Leon County could soon see a slight change in the Emergency Assistance Program.
That's because the county is looking to switch contracts with a new non profit to help out the veterans in our community.
WTXL ABC 27's Jada Williams was live Tuesday from the Leon County Courthouse.
Leon County is looking to partner with the Big Bend Homeless Coalition to administer the Veterans Emergency Assistance Program.
The program previously worked with help from the Emergency Care Help Organization.
In 2018, 133 veterans received financial help totaling almost $60,000.
But the team told the county that it would no longer be able to help in such a large capacity.
Now at Tuesday's Leon County Commission meeting, the team will work to move towards shifting the partnership to the Big Bend Homeless Coalition.
The BBHC already administers a similar program through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and has ties to other useful organizations.
The VEAP was established in 2013 to help the large number of soldiers returning from Iraq and struggling to pay for basic household expenses.
The program gives vets money to put towards rent, utilities, temporary shelter and more.
If approved, the proposed Agreement would begin on February 1, 2019 and allow for up to $100,000 in emergency financial assistance to eligible veterans.
