TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - It was only a few months ago when Leon County Commissioner's voted against establishing a Children's Service COuncil, instead opting to put it on the November ballot in 2020.
WTXL ABC 27's Jada Williams was live Wednesday morning at the Leon County Courthouse.
She saw how the planning committee for the council was already working to make sure voter's say yes in two years.
The Leon County Children's Services Council Planning Committee held their first meeting and the first call to order, electing leader's within the committee.
The 20 member committee selected Judge Jonathan Sjostrom as the chair and Monseia Brown as the vice chair.
Sjostrom serves as the chief judge of the Second Judicial Court while Brown is director of public affairs and government relations for Walmart.
Along with three consultants, the team met to discuss important goals, starting with early childhood issues, juvenille crime and mental health.
If approved, the Children's Services Council will serve as an independent council within Leon County with the power to impose taxes to pay for children's services.
Commissioner's adopted the Planning Committee in hopes that a more organized and inclusive plan is adopted.
They will meet the second Friday of every other month to finalize their goals.
