TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (The News Service of Florida) - Legislation filed at the state capitol would repeal a state law that once limited marriage to opposite-sex couples.
Court rulings in recent years have ensured the rights of same-sex couples to marry in Florida since 2015.
However, many LGBT rights groups say there is still symbolic meaning in repealing the obsolete law which limits marriage to between a man and woman.
Several lawmakers and the group Equality Florida held a news conference in the capitol today to support the repeal legislation. Senator Gary Farmer is the bill sponsor.
"It is our hope that in repealing this antiquated law, we give recognition to the power of love and the right that every person has, regardless of their sexual orientation, to express that love," said Gary Farmer.
Bill supporters say repealing the legislation would also be important if a more conservative future U.S. Supreme Court were to once again allow marriage to be a states' rights issue. In that scenario, current state law could once again be enforceable.
