LEON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - The Leon County Sheriff's Office wants to warn the public about the Romance Scam.

They say "Romance Scam" happens on dating sites and social media networks. The scammers prey on individuals by setting up fake profiles by using attractive profile pictures of other men or women.

The scammers create a phony success story about their lives overseas, only to trick the victims to establish a relationship with them.

The person may say they need help with money or claim they are having trouble cashing a check in order to receive money from you.

This crime is illegal and is classified as a felony.

LSCO is encouraging you to use caution when it comes to in online interactions.

They suggest that you run a search on the pictures of his/her profiles using Google Images or Tin Eye to make sure they're not using someone else's pictures.
