LEON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - Leon County Sheriff's Office is warning about a new scam targeting grandparents.
Scammers are calling the elderly to tell them their grandchild has been arrested.
They demand the grandparents send money for bond over the phone.
"It's very important if you get this kind of call to check your facts. Call your grandchild to see if they're O.K.," said Deputy Dave Teems. "You have a cell phone number for them and a lot of times they're going to have that in their hand anyway, so call them make sure they're O.K. Call the local detention center and see call your local law enforcement to see if anyone is with them."
Scammers are also using social media to learn more about their targets' grandchildren. They're looking at videos to try to mimic the grandchild's voice.
And remember, no law enforcement agency will ever ask you to pay over the phone.
