TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A gun-control advocacy group says this is the 18th school shooting in the United States since the first of the year.

With numbers like that, it's no wonder parents across the country are concerned for their children's safety.

WTXL spoke to local law enforcement about how they would respond to a school shooting in Tallahassee.

Officials said the middle schools and highs schools within Leon County have school resource deputies on staff who work daily to protect the students.

In the event of an active shooter situation at a school, they'd be the first on scene.

"If this deputy is on scene, he's on the school campus," said Lt. Grady Jordan of the Leon County Sheriffs Office. "We would hope that that response time would be minimal. With that information coming from that deputy coming from the scene to other responding units then that response time will be cut down tremendously."

The sheriff's office says the safety of children is their top priority.
