TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The Leon County Sheriff's Office will have a new place to train law enforcement.
On Tuesday county commissioners approved a plan to turn vacant property owned by the county into a training facility.
Right now, the new facility doesn't look like much at all.
It's a 10-acre piece of land on Tyson Road directly across from the FSU Rec Sportsplex.
The county owns this land and uses it to store equipment.
Before the county owned it, Tallahassee police used it as an outdoor shooting range.
It is estimated the county will save $800,000 because it won't have to look for land to buy and build facilities.
"Personnel would allow for LCSO to consolidate many of its current training activities to a single location, enhance education and workforce training opportunities for inmates at the Leon County Detention Facility," said Leon County Administrator Vince Long.
Right now, deputies are training at the Leon County Detention Center and sometimes have to travel to the Florida Public Safety Institute in Gadsden County.
With this plan now approved, county staff will start working on a solution.
