TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A 13-year-old has been arrested after bringing a knife to Cobb Middle School Thursday morning.

The Leon County Sheriff's Office confirms that a 13-year-old was arrested  at Cobb Middle School Thursday morning after a steak knife was found in his backpack.

LCSO was made aware of the situation after other students noticed the knife in his backpack and reported it to school administration, who then informed law enforcement.

At this time, deputies say there is no indication that the student was planning to do anything malicious or harm any students with the knife.

LCSO says the student was allegedly unaware that the weapon was in his backpack.

Sarah Hembree, the principal of Cobb Middle School, sent the following statement to WTXL about the incident:

This morning, prior to the start of school, a student was detained for having a steak knife on campus. Other students informed the School Resource Deputy and administration who were able to respond before school started. At no time were any threats made to the school or any student.

Safety is our number one priority, and I want to thank our parents and students for knowing they should report any and all potential issues to us. Having an SRD on campus ensures we are always able to respond quickly to concerns as they arise.
