LCSO provides tips on school bus safety

LEON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - The Leon County Sheriff's Office said paying attention to your surroundings is vital when driving in the mornings or afternoons.

Deputy Dave Teems said always pay attention to the stop sign arm on the bus and watch out for kids everywhere. Some might be crossing the road in front of the bus.

He also stated you should never be texting when you're around school buses and if you have people in your car with you, don't let them be a distraction.

If you have people in the car, make sure they don't distract you. If you see something that they don't see, let them know, don't be a backseat driver.

"There are several legal repercussions if you violate a school bus. When it comes to just going around the stop sign there are citations with that if you hit someone," said Deputy Teems. "There are citations involved with that and then if someone obviously dies as a result for that or severely injured, their are different citations and possible criminal charges involved depending on what's going on."
