TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Nearly seven percent of consumers became victims of identity fraud in 2017, according to data from Identity Force.
That's why the Leon County Sheriff's Office hosted a community shred day on Saturday.
The goal is to the curb the rising rate of identity theft by giving residents a way to safely get rid of personal documents.
One of them was Judie Crowley. She said she teaching her grandson, Reign, why it's important.
Plus Reign loves that he pushes the button to start shredding and gets to watch the process.
"We've got a lot of documents at home. I've very aware that identity theft is a problem so we're very careful. And it's too much to do in our home shredder, and so very appreciate that they're doing this. And I wanted to bring my grandson to show him how it's done," said Crowley.
LCSO says they plan to host the event twice a year.
It's free and open to the public. They can also recycle electronics and destroy your hard drive safely.
