LEON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - With the giving season starting to pick up, unfortunately so does package stealing.
Many people will send and receive gifts that will be dropped off on a porch and left there until someone picks it up. Sometimes the gift is picked up by porch pirates.
The good news is the Leon County Sheriffs Office believes they have better technology this year to lower the amount of these kinds of theft.
The technology, the ring app which allows people to give LCSO a chance to better identify suspects through house cameras.
But if you don’t have the camera system LCSO says there are other ways to protect your package.
"There is also the ability to put a box near your front door," said Deputy Dave Teems. "You can have a lock box that has a lock on the front of it that you will only have the key to, so if you are having something delivered just have the UPS person, the FedEx person, however it happens to be, put it in the box and lock the thing before they leave."
Teems says also getting to know your neighbors will help prevent theft, since they may be home and see something during the time of the crime.
