TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL)--Clients were asked to pay for their home repairs in advance, but then the work didn't get done. That's how one man was able to scam several victims out of more than $50,000, according to the Leon County Sheriff's Office.
Leon County deputies say Anthony Perry would pose as a licensed and insured contractor and would require full or partial payment before starting any work.
In June, the sheriff's office received reports that little or no work was being done on their homes after payment.
During the investigation, Perry left the state to avoid being arrested, but he was found Thursday in Colorado.
LCSO says there are usually signs a contractor is trying to scam you.
They say fake contractors will often say they have done work for your neighbor and can give them a discount since they have already done work in the area. The scammer usually will ask for partial payment upfront. They will take the money and are never seen again. They say scammers might also say they found a major problem that needs to be fixed immediately but need money upfront for supplies.
