TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Beware of people offering to lay pine straw on your yard, the Leon County Sheriff's Office is advising, and agree on the details before the work begins.

LCSO said that over the weekend a homeowner reported feeling scammed by three people who offered to lay pine straw in his yard for $4.00 a bale.

The homeowner agreed to their services and the three pulled a truck with a trailer containing bales of pine straw in front of his house, LCSO said in a Facebook post.

The people spread the pine straw in the front yard and told the homeowner they used more than a hundred bales and requested payment of more than $600.

The homeowner disagreed with their requested amount and agreed to give them a check for $300. The three left with the payment.

Checking his home's security camera, the homeowner found that only approximately 30 bales appeared to be tossed from the trailer into his yard.

He noticed that while two people were spreading the pine straw, the third person appeared to be using a cell phone to record the exterior of the house while walking around it.

Earlier on the weekend, LCSO received another complaint from the same subdivision about people going door to door offering pine straw.

Try to use reputable businesses to conduct business, especially around your home, LCSO said.
