TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Officials in Leon County are talking about crime prevention through environmental design or CPTED.
Lieutenant Grady Jordan with the Leon County Sheriff's Office says the concept is a multi-disciplinary approach to deterring criminal behavior that focuses on changing how places are laid out, how they look, and how they feel.
He says the goal is to reduce crime, reduce fear, and improve quality of life.
"You don't want to let your plants be overgrown and in front of windows or in front of things," said Grady. "What that does is give perpetrators a chance to hide somewhere if somebody is driving down the road or if you call law enforcement. If we are driving in an area looking for that perpetrator, he may have a chance to duck behind those taller bushes."
CPTED requires input from multiple people, including property managers, community developers, and law enforcement personnel, who bring together different information and resources about crime habits.
