Tallahassee, Fla. (WTXL)--It was used in Dallas, a bomb robot deployed neutralize a sniper attack on police, that same technology available right here to the Big Bend Regional Bomb Squad.

The Leon County Sheriff's Office operates a Hazardous Devices team. The unit houses a bomb robot; commonly used in suspicious package calls and hostage negotiations.

Rugged by nature the robot can tow nearly 1,000lbs but is delicate enough to open even the smallest packages.

" We actually deployed the robot on our first day that we had it...we were able to retrieve a briefcase, unzip the leather briefcase, read the name on a file folder inside and figure out who it belongs to", says Sergeant Gore.

Gore says the device is much like a remote control car, except the operator needs to have a lot of knowledge beyond hobby experience.

Though the technology boats many functions including those deployed in Dallas, officials say the use of robots are less about the functions themselves and more about saving lives.
