TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - As children are getting ready to head back to class, Leon County Schools are busy working out details on a school-based mental health plan.

A big topic of discussion at Monday's school board workshop, how Leon County Schools will use the $150,000 state grant to improve mental health programs.

Alan Cox, assistant superintendent of Leon County Schools, says the program will put a mental health counselor in every elementary and middle school. He's also bringing mental health social workers to the schools to make sure students get the help they need.

"We're front line people, other than the parents, we see the students, almost 35,000 of them," said Cox. "And our hope is to early identification and early treatment. Two things that we developed is a suicide risk assessment and a threat risk assessment instrument."

Cox says, he's bringing this plan to the Leon County School Board at Tuesday's regular meeting.

If it's approved, Cox will immediately start working with the Department of Education to get the mental health programs in place for this upcoming school year.
