THOMAS COUNTY, Ga. (WTXL) - The holiday season is often marked by lights and tinsel, but it's also the time law enforcement see an increase in criminal activity.

Around the holidays everyone is looking for extra cash to purchase those last minute gifts, but what you should also be looking out for is scammers to make sure you don't fall victim to their traps.

The Thomas County Sheriff Deputies say they just received a call from a woman who was scammed out of $4,000. Investigators say dozens of folks have called about scams ranging from the IRS, to Publishers Clearing House, lottery, and arrest scams.

The holiday season is when investigators see a spike in scam calls. They say they usually all have on thing in common: targeting elderly.

Deputies say its too easy to pay $5 online and get access to hundreds of phone numbers, making it easy for scammers. They say it's important to remember that once the money has left your accounts, there is a slim to none chance of getting it back.
