FRANKLIN COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - A huge fire in a local paradise: flames rose up Saturday on St. George Island, threatening homes and spreading across multiple city blocks.

Some were evacuated from their homes along the bay of the popular destination beach.

"[We] had a woods fire. A guy was burning some leaves and they got out of control," said Franklin County Sheriff A.J. Smith. "They put it down but then last night it flared back up again. It really got intense and you can see from whats burning here and it started burning close to a lot of houses."

Sheriff Smith says they mobilized "every asset" in the area, including local fire departments and local police departments.

"I was even on a hose last night," Sheriff Smith said. "Everybody just worked together really well, everybody just pitched in and worked hard. [The] Division of Forestry had their tractors and their tanker trucks in here putting water on it all night and all day."

The fire was not yet fully extinguished by Sunday afternoon.
