Lanier sheriff could take over city police

LAKELAND, Ga. (WTXL)--The Lanier County Sheriff's Office could possibly take over the City of Lakeland's police department.

If it happens the police department could become a division of the sheriff's office.

Lanier County Sheriff Nick Norton and Lakeland Mayor Bill Darsey agree it would be a move to save money for county and city residents.

Darsey says it's a long way from becoming a reality.

They'll be some discussion about at it the Lakeland city council meeting on Tuesday night at 5:30.
