LAFAYETTE COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - The Lafayette County Sheriff's Office is issuing a precautionary boiling water notice to all residents in the city of Mayo.

Deputies say there was a loss of water pressure due to a water leak, and as a precaution, they are advising that all water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, or washing dishes be boiled.

Tap water can be disinfected by adding eight drops of unscented household bleach to each gallon of water, then mixing the water and allowing it to stand for a minimum period of 30 minutes.

They say a rolling boil of one minute is sufficient and as an alternative, bottled water may be used.

Deputies say this precautionary boil water notice will remain in effect until the problem has been fixed and a bacteriological survey shows that the water is safe to drink.
