TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Wednesday is Homeless Person's Memorial Day and in preparation a local homeless shelter is doing what they can to give those experiencing homelessness, clothing and shelter that they desperately need at this time of the year.

Officials from the Kearney Center in Tallahassee say, during the past few months, they have averaged more than 350 people a night.

Right now, they are expecting the numbers to only climb between late January and early February.

The Kearney Center says this past Sunday, they passed their all-time record high, with 406 people staying at the facility.

They say the colder weather and willingness of people to accept help, are contributing factors to the rise in the homeless coming to the Kearney Center.

They also hand out meals and clothing to those who come to the shelter at night.

Wednesday the Kearney Center will host an event to honor and pay respects to those who died as they experienced homelessness, within the past year.
