Kansas High School Senior Dies After Football Game Collapse

SHARON SPRINGS, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas high school football player has died after collapsing on the sideline.

Wallace County school superintendent Brian McVay said Wednesday that Luke Schemm died at a hospital in Denver.

McVay says Schemm had just scored a touchdown and an extra point when he collapsed Tuesday night during an Eight-Man Division I game at Wallace County High School in Sharon Springs, about 220 miles east of the Colorado city.

McVay says it's unclear if Schemm suffered any injuries before he collapsed. He was a senior at Wallace County High.

Kansas State High School Activities Association executive director Gary Musselman says officials didn't see Schemm sustain any head contact during the game. He says if Schemm's death is determined to be football-related, it was the third in Kansas in 17 years.
