CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) — A judge overseeing the Colorado theater shooting case says jury selection is going so well that the first phase will be cut short by several days.

Judge Carlos A. Samour Jr. had planned to finish giving potential jurors written questionnaires by Feb. 13 but said Monday he will close that phase on Feb. 9.

The phase that includes individual questioning of potential jurors will begin Feb. 11.

About 9,000 possible jurors were initially sent summonses. Jury selection alone had been expected to last until May or June.

Those chosen will determine if James Holmes was sane during the 2012 attack that killed 12 people and injured 70 others. They will also be asked whether Holmes should be executed if convicted.

On Monday, Holmes sat expressionless at the defense table taking notes.
