Jonesboro Psychiatrist Linked to Numerous Overdose Deaths

Posted

JONESBORO, Ga. (AP) — A Clayton County psychiatrist has been accused of running a pill mill that authorities have linked to the deaths of dozens of patients.

Clayton County Police Chief Mike Register tells WSB-TV that Dr. Narendra Nagareddy overprescribed opiates and benzodiazepine over a period of several years in Jonesboro.

Agents from numerous law enforcement groups converged on Nagareddy's office Thursday to arrest the psychiatrist and search the property.

Legal documents say 36 of Nagareddy's patients have died, with 12 of the deaths having been confirmed to have been the result of prescription drug overdoses.

Clayton County District Attorney Tracy Graham Lawson says Nagareddy is being charged with prescribing pain medication outside of his profession and not for a legitimate use.

It is unclear if he has an attorney.
