The school district in Jefferson County is about half the size it was 10 years ago and a smaller district means less money for students. With less money, the district is unlikely to advance on a project to build a new elementary school.
While the district was able to build a new combined middle and high school about five years ago with the help of state funding, they are now looking to build the new school amid structural problems in the current building. Administrators say the school is falling apart, with broken pipes and exposed wires in the hall ways. Part of the school burned down last year, sending sixth graders to the middle-high school combination.
The district says it can not generate enough revenue alone to construct a new school and that the decision is up to the Florida State Legislature. The school was supposed to be built five years ago along with the middle-high school. They say the new school would take $14.7 million dollars to build. Right now, they have their eye on an abandoned school on the city's south side for a new location.
