SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) - A jail inmate's death is under investigation in southwest Florida.

Sarasota County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Wendy Rose says a preliminary investigation determined 25-year-old Maurice Carr's death was a suicide, but the investigation is ongoing. The medical examiner will perform an autopsy.

Rose says a corrections officer found Carr hanging from the ceiling of his cell early Monday. Carr was the only occupant of the cell. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

According to jail records, Carr was arrested Saturday on charges of felony domestic battery, battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence, criminal mischief and possession of marijuana. The records didn't show whether Carr had an attorney.
